City of Encinitas’ Moonlight Beach Receives Playground Project of Distinction Recognition

The City of Encinitas is not only receiving a new playground, but one that has been recognized as a Playground of Distinction by Playcraft Systems. This newly launched program recognizes communities and leaders who build playground spaces that encourages physical activity, imagination, intergenerational play, and/or inclusion.

Moonlight Beach, viewed by locals as a magical location situated right on the Pacific Ocean, was the selected site for a new playground. This beautiful beach community envisioned a beach themed playground that not only used colors that matched the surrounding natural elements but included shade to provide protection from the sun and its elements. The challenge was accepted by Pacific Play Systems, Inc., a company who provides playground design, installation, and outdoor recreation services in Southern California. After a lengthy bid process, they were selected to bring this project to life.

Pacific Play Systems design team, Salina Tuladhar with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Alex Campos with a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Ali Bemanian with a master’s degree in Architecture collaborated on the design.

“This was a challenging project to get off the ground mainly because of challenges presented due to COVID-19 and being able to communicate with the city staff while everyone was working remotely from home. But Playcraft did an excellent job manufacturing the equipment for us in record time to allow us stay ahead of schedule and deliver a truly magnificent playground to the City of Encinitas.”

The result was a beach themed structure with a colorful, climbable GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) surfboard, challenging climbers, traverses and slides. A freestanding pirate themed structure offers several ground level activities, and a spinning activity and swings provide fun for all ages. Poured in place rubber surfacing provides ADA access to all play elements.

Moonlight Beach received the Design for Dynamic Play recognition by Playcraft Systems due to the strategic design that focuses on promoting physical activity, creating learning activities and providing energetic movement.

The Grand Opening is scheduled for early July and there is no doubt that this state-of-the-art playground at Moonlight Beach will drive more traffic to the area and to the community. A sign noting the Playground of Distinction for Dynamic Play will be on display at the site.
